Caring for suede: how to clean and waterproof it

Suede feels soft and looks alive. It needs slightly different care than smooth leather. With a few simple steps, your ankle boots, sneakers and loafers stay beautiful for a long time.

In short: Brush regularly, waterproof before the first wear, and let wet shoes dry slowly.

What is suede?

Suede is leather with a roughened surface. That gives it a velvety, matte look. The rough structure also picks up dust and moisture more easily, so a fixed care routine is worth it.

Do I need to waterproof suede?

Yes, we recommend it. A waterproofing spray for suede makes the surface more resistant to rain and dirt. Ideally, spray it evenly from about 20 to 30 centimetres away before the first wear and let it dry well. Repeat when needed, for example at the start of the cold season.

How do I brush suede correctly?

Use a suede brush or a rubber sponge. Always brush in one direction, not in circles. This lifts the nap and loosens dust. Once a week is enough if you wear them regularly.

How do I remove stains?

Dry stains can often be removed with a special eraser or the rubber sponge. For water stains, dampen the area lightly and let it dry evenly so no ring remains. For grease, paint or stubborn dirt, use a suede care product and follow the instructions on the packaging. Test it on an inconspicuous spot first.

What should I do if my shoes get wet?

Do not put them on the radiator and do not use a hairdryer. This makes the leather hard and can damage it. Instead, stuff them with newspaper or use a shoe tree and let them dry at room temperature. Then brush them and waterproof again if needed.

How do I store suede shoes?

Dry, airy and not in plastic. A shoe tree helps keep their shape. Direct sunlight can fade the colour.

Care by shoe type

  • Ankle boots and boots: Brush the upper and sole briefly after wearing.
  • Sneakers: Brush edges and seams regularly so dirt cannot settle.
  • Loafers: Brush marks on the toe and heel area straight away.
